Our partner Mote Marine Laboratory teamed up with conservation superstars [Marine Connectivity Working Group]
to finally establish an overdue '13 Rules of Thumb' when it comes to marine protected areas and conservation
using ecological connectivity.
Ecological Connectivity
Connectivity conservation focuses on maintaining, enhancing, or restoring
connectivity in response to the destruction of vegetation, habitats, and loss of species.
Global Conservation
Different species move around, migrating throughout the waters to different areas - this process can change the way species eat, reproduce, and behave. Studying this connectivity will determine the best way to protect marine species globally.
The Significance
Previously ecological connectivity had not been effectively reflected or implemented in the conservation of marine protected areas. The Marine Connectivity Working Group and Mote Lab have worked together using the best science available to determine the criteria for a brighter future.
