Chimps

We've partnered with the Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center to help fund the rescue and support of monkeys & chimps within their habitats.

Founded in 2002 in response to increased poaching, the Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Center (CRPL) in the Congo provides sanctuary and recovery for orphaned primates, and is recognized for its commitment to high animal welfare standards and conservation efforts.

Meet

Ivan The Chimp

Ivan, a one-year-old baby, was seized by the environmental service in the Poko territory (Bas Uele province) and transferred to the provincial coordination in Buta. Initially under the care of an agent, Ivan was severely neglected, with little hope for his survival. Found in a dire condition—starving, dehydrated, lethargic, dirty, suffering from diarrhea, and with a nasal discharge—Ivan knew only bananas as food and lacked the strength to chew. Despite the challenging journey towards recovery, Ivan is now healthy and thriving!

CRPL was alerted by a contact in Bukavu about a chimpanzee being sold there. In response, they coordinated with ICCN Kahuzi Biega National Park rangers, and after two weeks of investigation, the trafficker was apprehended, and the chimpanzee was rescued. Upon arrival, the two-year-old chimpanzee had injuries around her waist from the rope and was very ill.

Meet

Djiku the Chimp

A baby chimpanzee, about three months old, was confiscated by ICCN Virunga from the Nyatura militia at Virunga National Park and swiftly transferred to the Gorilla Doctors office and then to Lwiro by boat on the same day. The baby arrived with a hand injury, dried blood, and his mother's hair still attached, yet showed a good appetite. On the same day, in the central Virunga sector, two rangers lost their lives. In honor of one of these rangers, the baby chimpanzee was named after him.
