Mountain gorillas are susceptible to human respiratory diseases and respiratory illness outbreaks are common in wild mountain gorillas. Isimbi group, a family of mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda experienced an outbreak and while most individuals recovered on their own, a few required supportive treatment of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and fluids administered via dart. To date, no ill gorillas tested by Gorilla Doctors have tested positive for COVID-19.
