Meet Hua Mei

Hua Mei, born on August 21, 1999, is a female giant panda. She is the first giant panda cub born in the USA who survived to adulthood, so she became an instant celebrity.

A Popular Panda Mama

After the devastating 2008 Sichuan earthquake badly damaged the panda center in
Wolong, Hua Mei was relocated to the Bifengxia Panda Base in Ya’an.

Hua Mei is the mother of 12 cubs, 4 sets of twins and 4 single cubs. Hua Mei gave birth to her most recent set of twins in 2018.

Hua Mei’s half-brother, Mei Sheng, left the San Diego Zoo in November 2007 to live at the Wolong Panda Center. Hua Mei’s half-sisters, Su Lin and Zhen Zhen, left the San Diego Zoo in September 2010 to live at the Bifengxia Panda Center. Her half-brother Yun Zi returned to china in 2014. Her youngest half sibling, Xiao Li Wu, and her mother, Bai Yun, both returned to China in May of 2019.

San Diego Zoo currently does not have any Giant Pandas remaining.
